FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions about the Retreat in Portugal

Should I fly into Lisbon?

In the past, I have flown into Lisbon and then rented a car for the 2.5-hr drive south. I have not connected Lisbon to Faro (the closest airport to Tavira) as the layover is much longer than the drive.

The passport control line in Lisbon can be long. Expand your choices to other European cities that have direct flights to Faro. For instance, I have flown US to Munich and then Munich to Faro. Google is a great resource – you could even search “Europe to Faro” and see what comes up. I recommend using Google Flights to compare prices and then book directly with the airline. ✈️

Search cities that fly direct to Faro

You might even consider flying into Portugal a day or two early (to experience Lisbon or Porto or Azores, for instance) before flying to Faro. There are also shuttles for hire and train service (Lisbon-Faro-Tavira or Faro-Tavira). Please ask for assistance in planning your trip – I am happy to help! 😃

What’s the weather like in Tavira? What clothes should I pack?

Tavira is typically hot in summer and mild other times of year. The air is dry and the sun is plentiful. The ocean waters can be quite chilly.  It can be windy at times. Light, cool layers are your best bet. And comfortable shoes (with a thicker sole) are a must! On my last visit I bought these Timberland sandals, which were perfect on the cobblestones.

Cobblestones abound

What kind of yoga? Is it ok for a beginner?

Morning Yoga was one of my favorite parts and I’m not a yoga person. 🧘‍♂️

Joe, retreat guest

The style of yoga (Viniyoga) is for EVERY body, meaning anyone at any age. But this is not a yoga retreat, per se. It’s more about gentle tune-ups to support us as we tour the Algarve.

You can see an example of some Viniyoga poses I did in the streets of Lisbon here

Should I bring euros or exchange US cash?

It is probably easier to use an ATM upon arrival at the airport to withdraw euros. Exchanging US cash or obtaining euros in the US usually incurs more fees. There are several ATMs in downtown Tavira. Most ATMs limit withdrawal to 300 euros per day.

Can I use a credit card?

Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted. You may want give the credit/debit card company a heads up that you will be visiting Portugal.

What else should I bring?

  • Passport

  • Flip flops
  • Bathing suit
